The 2025 Winchell Lecture: "Integrating Regional Anesthesia into Academic Healthcare"

The annual Sidney W. Winchell, MD, Endowed Lecture honors Dr. Winchell’s legacy and commitment to advancing the field of anesthesiology. Established by the Winchell family, the lecture recognizes his training at Columbia, where he served as chief resident before embarking on a distinguished career that spanned academic medicine, military service, and private practice. He was a pioneer in resuscitation care, and the Winchell Lecture continues to inspire new generations of anesthesiologists, reinforcing the role of education, research, and patient-centered care in our evolving field.

On March 13, the Department of Anesthesiology welcomed Dr. Edward R. Mariano to the Winchell lecture as guest speaker. A recognized leader in regional anesthesiology and acute pain medicine, Dr. Mariano has transformed clinical practice through his groundbreaking work in continuous peripheral nerve blocks and his leadership in accrediting regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine (RAAPM) fellowship programs nationwide. His research and advocacy have significantly influenced patient safety, surgical recovery, and opioid-sparing pain management.  Dr. Mariano is Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford University and Chief of Anesthesiology at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System.

His lecture, “Integrating Regional Anesthesia into Academic Healthcare: Making the Case So Everyone Wins,” explored how regional anesthesia can enhance perioperative care, improve patient outcomes, and align with institutional priorities in academic medicine.
