Third Annual Jordan Memorial Lecture: Leveraging Implementation Science for DEI in Perioperative Medicine

On June 6, the Department of Anesthesiology hosted the third Desmond A. Jordan, MD, Endowed Memorial Lecture. The Department of Surgery is an annual co-host of this lecture series honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Desmond Jordan, who was beloved by members of both departments as teacher, anesthesiologist, and intensivist.

The guest speaker, Meghan Lane-Fall, MD, MSHP, FCCM, David E. Longnecker Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the University of Pennsylvania, presented “Leveraging implementation science and quality improvement to achieve diversity, equity, and inclusion in perioperative medicine." The hour was an inspiring exploration of how implementation science and quality improvement can drive meaningful progress in diversity, equity, and inclusion in perioperative medicine. A key takeaway was the necessity of distinguishing and clarifying for all stakeholders that the concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) apply differently to patient care versus the healthcare workforce. Dr. Lane-Fall emphasized that while DEI principles are universally important, their applications differ significantly in these two contexts. Watch the video recording of the lecture and learn more about Dr. Lane-Fall below.

The 2024 lecture opened with recollections of Dr. Jordan by Interim Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, Dr. Tricia Brentjens, and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery. Guest speaker Dr. Lane-Fall was introduced by Dr. Maya Jalbout Hastie, Professor of Anesthesiology and co-chair of the Jordan Lecture Committee, and in the closing minutes of the lecture, Dr. Lane-Fall answered questions in a discussion led by Dr. Holden Groves. Dr. Groves is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at CUMC, a member of the Jordan Lecture Committee, and a former mentee of Dr. Jordan.

The Jordan Lecture is a special occasion for the Department of Anesthesiology, the Department of Surgery, and VP&S. The Interim Chair for the Department of Anesthesiology, Dr. Tricia Brentjens, is delighted to share the recording of Dr. Lane-Fall’s lecture, presented in honor of Dr. Desmond Jordan and with the hope of building a more equitable and inclusive healthcare system.
