Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship
The Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology provides clinical training in all aspects of pediatric anesthesia for fellows and residents. Our one-year advanced fellowship program in pediatric anesthesiology is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and prepares graduates for the challenges and rewards of a career in pediatric anesthesiology.
Fellowship Overview
During the fellowship year, each fellow is exposed to a diverse and comprehensive clinical experience. Fellows provide anesthesia care to neonates, infants, children, and adolescents across all pediatric surgical and medical subspecialties, inside and outside of the operating room. Our fellows work alongside top-notch surgeons and medical doctors in their specialty fields, providing medical care to small children and young adolescents with the latest surgical techniques and medical advancements at CHONY.
We offer a pediatric anesthesiology curriculum that employs a longitudinal experience in cardiac anesthesia, regional anesthesia, pediatric pain, and perioperative medicine; this experience is unique among all pediatric anesthesiology fellowship programs in the country. The longitudinal experience allows our fellows to acquire technical skills and clinical knowledge that are built on prior experiences and reinforced as they progress through the year. The critical care experience will include rotations in pediatric intensive care as well as neonatal intensive care.
In addition to the clinical experience, we have a robust didactic curriculum based on the ABA Pediatric Anesthesiology Examination Content Outline, designed to educate our fellows on topics in pediatric anesthesiology. The didactic curriculum consists of a series of lectures by fellows to residents, providing them with opportunities to become educators in their field and to develop their speaking skills. We invite guest speakers from medical and surgical specialties to give lectures to our fellows and residents, and hold monthly interdisciplinary M&M conferences to discuss interesting cases.
The Division of Pediatric Anesthesia has active programs in both basic science and clinical research. Fellows participate in ongoing research projects and present their work at national meetings. Our fellows have opportunities to pursue quality improvement (QI) projects through our quality assurance (QA) database, which captures pertinent information for all pediatric anesthesia cases at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital.
The clinical, teaching, and research experiences during the fellowship year provide a powerful collection of skills and expertise, preparing our fellows to take care of every pediatric patient, ranging from the highest acuity, critically ill child to the healthy outpatient. Our fellows also have the option of pursuing a second year of pediatric cardiac anesthesia and we offer advanced placement in the two-year pediatric general and cardiac anesthesia fellowships for those who have an early interest. Please visit our pediatric cardiac anesthesia fellowship site for details.
